Couples’ Holidays in Ruka–Kuusamo – Adventures, Relaxation and Places to Stay
Sometimes the best holiday is simply a chance to get away from everyday routines and spend uninterrupted time together. In Ruka–Kuusamo, northern Finland, that can mean waking up surrounded by nature, heading out for an adventure, enjoying a long dinner or ending the day by the fire in your own cabin.
Ruka–Kuusamo works equally well for couples looking for an active escape and those who simply want to slow down. Skiing, hiking, wildlife, northern lights and outdoor adventures are all part of the experience, but so are quiet forests, peaceful lakes, good food and evenings with nowhere else to be.
This balance between activities and tranquillity is one of the reasons Ruka–Kuusamo works so well for couples. You can have an adventure when you want one, without feeling that every hour of the holiday needs to be organised.
Whether you are planning a romantic holiday, celebrating an anniversary or simply looking for a change of scenery together, there is no need to follow a fixed itinerary. Choose the experiences that interest you, leave room for spontaneous days and enjoy Ruka–Kuusamo in your own way.
With Rukako’s wide choice of cabins, holiday homes and holiday apartments in the Ruka area, you can stay close to Ruka Ski Resort, restaurants and activities while choosing the setting and type of accommodation that suits your trip.

Four seasons – four different ways to experience Ruka–Kuusamo
Experiencing something new together can be one of the best parts of travelling as a couple, and Ruka–Kuusamo offers different possibilities throughout the year. Each season changes the landscape and brings new ways to explore it together.
Winter brings deep snow and a huge choice of Arctic experiences. You can ski or snowboard at Ruka, explore cross-country trails, walk through snowy forests on snowshoes or head into the wilderness on a snowmobile. Husky and reindeer safaris offer another way to experience the winter landscape, while the long, dark evenings bring opportunities to see the northern lights. After a day outside, return to the warmth of your cabin, sauna and fire.
And winter does not suddenly end when the calendar says spring. April is one of the most enjoyable times to experience Ruka, with plenty of snow, excellent skiing conditions and much longer, brighter days. Spring sunshine and often milder temperatures create a completely different atmosphere from midwinter and allow you to spend long days outdoors.
Summer changes everything. Forests become green, rivers flow through the landscape and lakes open up for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Hiking and mountain biking trails range from relaxed excursions to more demanding adventures, while rafting offers something for couples looking for more excitement. Explore Oulanka National Park and the famous Karhunkierros trails, or simply choose a shorter route, pack something to eat and find a beautiful place to spend a few hours together.
The long northern summer days leave plenty of time to explore without rushing. Have an active morning, stop for a long lunch and still have hours of daylight ahead of you.
Then comes autumn and ruska, when the forests turn shades of yellow, orange and red. It is a beautiful season for hiking, cycling, photography, berry picking, mushroom foraging and fishing, as well as simply enjoying peaceful days in nature. As the nights become darker again, the northern lights return too, combining colourful autumn landscapes during the day with the possibility of seeing the aurora after dark.
You do not need to be experienced adventurers to enjoy Ruka–Kuusamo. Activities and routes range from easy outings to more challenging experiences, so you can choose how active you want your holiday to be – and leave plenty of time for relaxing together too.

Good food, relaxed dinners and evenings by the fire
After a day outdoors, good food becomes part of the experience. Ruka has a varied selection of restaurants and cafés, so staying in a cabin or apartment does not mean having to cook every day. Go out for a relaxed lunch, stop somewhere after skiing or make dinner at a restaurant as part of a special evening together.
The food of the region is influenced by northern nature, with ingredients such as local fish, game, mushrooms and berries appearing in different forms on menus.
If you prefer to stay in, having your own kitchen gives you another option. Pick up ingredients, prepare something together and enjoy dinner in the privacy of your holiday home. Add a sauna and an evening by the fire, and there is little reason to go anywhere else.
For an anniversary or romantic getaway, combining outdoor experiences with a special dinner and the privacy of your own cabin can be much more personal than following a traditional city-break itinerary.

Watch the northern lights together
Few shared experiences are quite like seeing the northern lights for the first time.
The aurora season in northern Finland begins as the nights become dark again towards the end of summer, so northern lights can already be seen from late August. The opportunities continue through autumn and the dark winter months.
You can join a guided northern lights excursion, head away from artificial lights or simply keep an eye on the sky from your accommodation when conditions are right.
In autumn, the aurora can appear above colourful forests and dark lakes. In winter, the same lights illuminate an entirely different landscape of deep snow and frozen forests.
And sometimes the best plan is simply to make something warm to drink, step outside together and see what the night brings.

Rent a car and discover Kuusamo together
Ruka provides easy access to ski slopes, restaurants, activities and services, but there is much more to discover beyond the immediate Ruka area.
Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the wider Kuusamo region independently. Instead of following an organised itinerary, you can decide where you want to go that morning and stop whenever something catches your attention.
Drive out to a hiking area, discover a quiet lake, visit Oulanka National Park or explore parts of Kuusamo that you would otherwise miss. Depending on the season, your day might involve hiking, photography, fishing, berry picking, mushroom foraging or simply exploring the landscape.
The distances also give you a sense of how extensive Ruka–Kuusamo really is. Ruka offers plenty of activities and services, but beyond it lies a vast landscape of forests, rivers and lakes waiting to be explored.
